The method chosen by the PRI members to renew their national leadership is that of an assembly of councilors who are part of the National Political Council.

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) launched its call to renew its leadership, in which it is contemplated that Alejandro Moreno, current national president of this political organization, can compete for reelection for the period 2024-2028.

The PRI issued its call only five days after it reformed its Statutes to allow the reelection of Alejandro Moreno, who will have the possibility of extending his position as leader until 2028 and could even do so until 2032.

How are the leaders of the PRI elected? According to Article 174 of the party’s Statutes, there are three types of election of the presidency and the general secretary of the PRI’s CEN: the direct election of the militant base; through the National Political Council; and in the National Assembly of delegates.

The call establishes that on August 11, 2024, the internal vote of councilors of the tricolor party will take place. That same day, the calculations will be made, the results will be announced, the validity of the contest will be declared and the certificate of majority will be delivered to whoever is the winner.

The Assembly of Councilors argued that the new method of election encourages the participation of the membership through its representatives in the highest permanent deliberative body, this being the National Political Council, with territorial and national representation.

According to Article 174 of the party’s Statutes, there are three types of election of the presidency and the general secretary of the PRI’s CEN: the direct election of the militant base; through the National Political Council; and in the National Assembly of delegates.

The election must be held before August 18

Regarding the warning of the PRI members dissatisfied with the reelection, in the sense that if the INE still does not approve the new statutes of the party, the Electoral Tribunal of the Power of the Federation will be able to reject all the procedures endorsed by the PRI, Rubén Moreira said that «let them challenge if they want, we have a history of the Court where they can» make this type of changes in the statutes.

He affirmed that «the statutes come into force the moment they are approved,» and reiterated that «we have to make the election before August 18, no matter what.«
