An AP-NORC poll finds about three-quarters also disapprove of how he handles the economy. About half want substantial change. He spent Wednesday in Arizona and Montana promising a $5,000 check if Republicans hold Congress.

Oregon

A 16-year-old killed four at a Bend elementary school.

Police said a boy shot through the locked doors of Silver Rail Elementary on Thursday. A teacher and three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically hurt. The shooter was found dead. He has not been named.

The Gulf

A Houthi strike killed 13 at the Riyadh airport.

More than 300 people were wounded at King Khalid International. A second strike hit the same airport. Saudi Arabia is asking how the missiles got through. The Houthis said Saudi bombs on Sanaa killed 10.

Ukraine

Russian drones killed three and cut power to 370,000.

Kharkiv’s governor said two people died and 12 were wounded. A strike on a food plant in Volyn killed one and wounded eight. Crews had restored power to about 100,000 by morning. Shopping centers in Sumy and Rivne were hit.

Prices

Wholesale prices rose 6.3 percent.

The producer-price index jumped 1.3 percent in September, the biggest monthly gain since March 2022. Energy prices for producers rose 10.8 percent. Economists had expected a much smaller move. Social Security’s cost-of-living raise for next year is 3.6 percent.

Space

Four astronauts splashed down off California.

SpaceX brought Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, Sophie Adenot, and Andrey Fedyaev home on Thursday after eight months. They had gone up in February to replace a crew sent home when a NASA astronaut fell ill.

Ukraine’s drones still run on Chinese parts.

Magnets, motors, chips, sensors and battery cells still come from China, a dozen makers told the Associated Press. Switching to Western parts could raise the cost by 60 percent and cut production by as much.

The Pacific

Hurricane Simon is crawling off Jalisco.

At 5 a.m. local time the National Hurricane Center put the Category 3 storm 50 miles west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, with winds of 115 miles an hour. It was moving at 2 miles an hour. The turn inland is expected around midweek.
