Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Donald Trump on Saturday called his Democratic rival Kamala Harris «mentally disabled» and said illegal migrants are on the loose to slit the throats of Americans in their own homes, doubling down on the rhetoric he himself describes as «dark» and with which he is trying to regain the presidency of the United States.
Trump hit back at Harris after the vice president visited the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday and vowed to do more to control undocumented migrant crossings and asylum claims.
The issue is seen as a weakness of Harris’ in polls, which show her neck-and-neck with Trump heading into the November 5th election. In Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Trump, 78, blamed Harris and President Joe Biden for an «invasion» of violent criminals.
Anti-immigration sentiment, present in Trump’s messages since 2016 and in areas of the country with a majority white population and economically depressed, is becoming increasingly extreme as the elections approach.
Meanwhile, Harris attended a fundraiser in San Francisco, California, on Saturday, where she said Trump was using «the same worn-out script» that the country has «heard for years.»
«This election is about two very different visions for our country,» said the 59-year-old former California prosecutor.
Trump, for his part, described the United States under attack, despite declining numbers of border crossings and a sharp decline in crime overall, especially murders, according to the FBI.
«They will come into your kitchen and cut your throat,» Trump said, referring to illegal migrants.
Aware that his speech does not resemble those of past presidential campaigns, he asked: «Isn’t this a wonderful and inspiring speech? I have people sitting in the front row and they say ‘Oh my God.'»
«This is a dark speech,» the former president admitted. He also claimed without evidence that illegal migrants he calls «animals» are going to take over the jobs of union workers.
They «are going to rape, loot, rob and kill the people of the United States of America,» the Republican said.
