A New York jury has found Donald Trump guilty of concealing payments to a porn star. The ruling could be an earthquake for his presidential campaign five months before the elections in which he seeks to regain the White House.

The former president faced 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to the reimbursement to his lawyer for paying a total of $130,000 in 2016 to porn actress Stormy Daniels to hush up an alleged sexual relationship in 2006.

The ruling puts the U.S. in uncharted political territory, but it does not prevent Trump from running for president, even in the unlikely event that Judge Juan Merchan, who will announce the sentence on July 11, sentences him to prison.

The verdict comes just weeks before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump will receive the party’s formal nomination to face Joe Biden on Nov. 5.

From the beginning of the cases against him, all analysts agree that the impact on the electorate will be null or, on the contrary, his power as a candidate will increase. A survey published by The Rocket News earlier this year accounted for that. 76% of Republicans think that the accusation against Trump is politically motivated and does not change their assessment of the former president at all.

61% of those consulted say that the indictment will not change their view of Trump and 14% maintain that it will change it for the better and only 7% admit that it can worsen their view of Trump.

Prosecutors in the case also suggest that in the case of classified documents found in his possession after leaving the White House, that statements be prohibited because of the risk that «they pose a significant danger» to law enforcement officers involved in the process. On his social network, Truth Social, he pointed out that «Joe Biden’s Department of Justice authorized the FBI to use lethal force» against Trump.

In this context, the White House affirmed that it respects the «rule of law» after Donald Trump became the first former president of the United States to be found guilty in a criminal trial.

«We respect the rule of law, and we have no additional comment,» Ian Sams, a White House spokesman, said in a statement.
