Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense for the use of its generative AI assistant, which has recently been surrounded by controversy.
The announcement of this agreement, made by the company on Monday on X, is part of a collaboration program between the company and federal government administrations, known as Grok for Government. Launched in late 2023, Grok is xAI’s generative AI assistant, and it frequently makes headlines for its inappropriate comments.
Some of the chatbot’s responses praised Adolf Hitler, denounced ‘anti-white stereotypes’ on the social network X, and commented on the ‘disproportionate’ representation of Jews in Hollywood. xAI apologized on Saturday for this content and announced that it had already fixed the issue that caused these responses from its assistant.
AFP found that the new version of the chatbot, Grok 4, presented on Wednesday, was consulting Musk’s opinion on some topics before providing a response. The contract between xAI and the Department of Defense comes in a context of disagreement between Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump over the approval of the massive budget and tax law promoted by the Republican.
