The steps towards a possible annexation of Greenland by the United States are moving forward, even more so after Republican Congressman Randy Fine introduced an initiative that would allow Donald Trump to continue with this plan.

The legislator from Florida echoed the US president’s speech on the importance to US security of owning what is considered the largest island on the planet.

Greenland is not some distant place we can ignore; it is vital to national security.

«Whoever controls Greenland controls the key shipping lanes of the Arctic and the security architecture that protects the United States, which cannot leave its future in the hands of regimes that despise our values and seek to undermine our security,» he said.

Unlike the actions taken to capture and remove Nicolás Maduro from Venezuela, where an order from the Department of Justice was carried out, any move by the US executive requires authorization from Congress.

Seeks to secure his financial future

According to Fine, annexing Greenland is vital not only for the current security of the United States, but also as a guarantee that the nation’s economic future will be viable for several generations.

«For too long, American leadership has stagnated while our adversaries have countered our geopolitical dominance. My proposal will protect our homeland, secure our economic future, and ensure that the United States—not China or Russia—sets the rules in the Arctic. This is what American leadership and strength looks like,» he concludes.
