BEND, Ore. — The youngest child killed at Silver Rail Elementary was Rhoam Summer, 5, the Associated Press reported Friday. His aunt, Swan Sheridan, said he was a fast runner and a fearless climber who loved reading and stuffed animals. “He never met a stuffie that he didn’t think needed to be rescued and cared for,” she said. “He was a little ball of energy from the moment he was born.” The other two children who were killed were 8 and 11. Police have not released their names, at the families’ request. A fourth student, 7, and a 54-year-old teacher were critically hurt. That was Thursday’s account, and it stands.

Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, was killed, Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a Friday news conference. Her family said: “Megan was compassionate and had a huge heart. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs.” Police said the shooter was Griffin J. John II, 16. He got in by shooting through locked doors. Authorities said he had been a special-needs student at the school and attacked a classroom of special-needs students. Krantz said a parent saw him shooting outside, followed him in, and shot him several times. The parent was Kaylub Giamanco, his mother, Kenda Freeman, said in a statement read to reporters. Police found John dead minutes after the first calls.

The New York Times reported that a teacher wrestled a shotgun away from the shooter and that an armed bystander then shot him. This desk is not assigning that struggle to Lambert. She is among the dead. Thursday’s note, filed before the names, stays in the well.
