EL PASO — A federal judge on Friday halted border-wall construction in the Big Bend sector of Texas. Judge Kathleen Cardone wrote that the government “shall not build border barrier or related infrastructure, or engage in any construction or ground disturbing activities, in the Big Bend sector.” She said the waivers the administration had given itself do not hold while the case is open, and that the plaintiffs were likely to succeed on at least one claim.
The New York Times reported the order. The suit was brought by people including a river guide and a church group. They want to stop barriers along more than 500 miles of the frontier with Mexico. Customs and Border Protection said it stood by its authorities and by its reading of the landscape. Reuters reported the order also reaches Big Bend National Park. The halt is Friday’s news. Nothing on Sunday moved it.
The States desk files the order. It is a Texas case, not a Mexico note. Santa Elena Canyon is the country the suit is trying to leave alone.
