WASHINGTON — The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Democrats will control both chambers of Congress. Michelle L. Price and Seung Min Kim, updated at 1:44 a.m. Eastern, wrote that Democrats won at least seven Senate seats: Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. AP said it is the first time in decades that Texas, Kansas and South Carolina have elected Democratic senators, and that Kansas had not elected a Democratic senator in nearly a century. The House call is separate. AP’s live page said Democrats won the House. Price and Kim wrote that Democrats flipped districts that voted for President Trump by as much as 18 points in 2024. This desk does not print a House seat count. The wires do not agree on one.

AP’s Morning Wire reported that Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in Michigan, and that Troy Jackson defeated Susan Collins in Maine. The live page said El-Sayed will be the country’s first Muslim senator. James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in Texas. Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham in South Carolina. Adam Hamilton defeated Roger Marshall in Kansas. Josh Turek defeated Ashley Hinson in Iowa. Roy Cooper’s North Carolina call was Tuesday night and is a separate note. I don’t view it as a hit on me.

On Fox News, in an interview that aired early Wednesday, Trump said Democrats “did a good job” and “I don’t view it as a hit on me.” He faulted Republican candidates. The White House said he has no public events on Wednesday. Speaker Mike Johnson wrote overnight that “the outcome of this midterm is not what we’d hoped and fought for” and that “a new battle is just beginning.” The Associated Press, citing a source, reported that Johnson will not seek another term as House Republican leader.
