BRASÍLIA — Senator Flávio Bolsonaro finished first and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva finished second in Sunday’s opening round, The Washington Post reported. Neither won a majority. They meet in a runoff on Oct. 25. Four years ago Lula unseated Flávio’s father, Jair Bolsonaro, by the narrowest margin in the country’s history.
Flávio, 45, was little known until this campaign. His Liberal Party gained seats in Congress. Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro won a Senate place, and two other sons of Jair Bolsonaro won legislative seats. Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth term. Jair Bolsonaro is in prison, serving 27 years for trying to overturn his 2022 loss. The photograph is Flávio Bolsonaro’s official Senate portrait, not a frame from election night.
Sunday’s paper said Brazilians were voting that day, with the race nearly even. The first round is over. The World desk files the runoff. The drones are on the war page.
