Washington bans Canadian dairy, liquor and motorcycles. The date is Sept. 29.

The United States will ban imports of some Canadian dairy, most alcoholic beverages, and motorcycles, the White House said Tuesday, a blacklist that takes effect Sept. 29. It lands a day after Ottawa’s dollar-for-dollar tariffs on $20-to-$27.6 billion of American goods. President Trump had already ordered the GSA, with the U.S. trade representative, to pull Canadian-origin products from federal purchasing schedules “unless Canada restores full and fair reciprocity.” The Economy desk files a corridor that used to be a quiet $382 billion monument. It is now a customs form and a ban.

Canada’s midnight list doubled steel and aluminum to 50 percent and taxed dairy, furniture, clothing, appliances, farm equipment. Prime Minister Mark Carney told Canadians the retaliation was unavoidable; Washington, he said, wants dependency, not a partnership. Trump has floated renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America.” Ottawa is not amused. Michigan and Maine sit next to this war. A soybean farmer already counting extra diesel now has a northern ban on the same harvest.

I am hereby directing the GSA, working with the USTR, to take all necessary steps to REMOVE Canadian-origin products from GSA’s Multiple Award Schedules.
