AAA: $5.85 diesel, $4.15 gasoline. Labor Day weekend will be the most expensive on record. Farmers are already counting the harvest.

Diesel hit a record in the United States on Friday: $5.85 a gallon, on average, for the first time. The Associated Press timed the print to dawn. The six-month war with Iran timed the cause. A corridor that moves a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil has been a shooting gallery long enough that the shortage is no longer a forecast. It is a receipt.

The old peak, from the summer after Russia invaded Ukraine, has been passed. Inventories are lean for the season. Refining costs have gone where wars send them. Vice President Vance blamed a previous administration. The pump does not keep a party registration. Households will meet this story as milk, bread, and the freight on everything else, with the midterms still on the calendar.

A war that cannot be named still prices the truck.

Relief, the energy desks say, depends on ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz again — or on a peace that is thicker than the last one. Until then the Economy page files the number. By evening, AAA had gasoline at $4.15 and a Labor Day weekend that will be the most expensive holiday driving on record. A soybean farmer told AFP the extra diesel could cost him $15,000 this harvest. That is not a briefing. It is a season.

Wholesale prices rose 6.3 percent.

The producer-price index jumped 1.3 percent in September, the biggest monthly gain since March 2022. Energy prices for producers rose 10.8 percent. Economists had expected a much smaller move. Social Security’s cost-of-living raise for next year is 3.6 percent.

The Consumer Price Index gained 0.6 percent in the month, more than economists expected over the year. Gasoline did the lifting. Core inflation rose to 2.6 percent. The Fed meets again on Oct. 27.

Stocks were mixed at midday, and diesel was $6.27.

At 12:12 p.m. Eastern the Dow was up 228 points and the Nasdaq was down 0.2 percent. Energy shares rose with the oil price. AAA’s national diesel average on Monday was $6.27 a gallon.
