AAA put the U.S. diesel average at $6.06 a gallon on Friday, a record. California stations have printed as high as $7.98. Five boards in that state ran out of nines. Regular gasoline is $4.30. The Economy desk files the workhorse fuel, not the speech. Trucks, farms, hospitals, the Northeast furnace — they all buy diesel.
Brent slipped Friday to about $104 after a $108 print Thursday, still up more than 8 percent on the week. WTI dipped under $100 in the session. The IEA said Saudi supply is at a three-decade low after Houthi strikes. U.S. diesel inventories sit 13 percent under the five-year average. Goldman has Gulf crude exports at roughly two-thirds of the pre-war flow. Refined product is tighter than the barrel.
Diesel prices in the U.S. reached $6.0556 a gallon for the first time.
