AAA put the U.S. diesel average at $6.4476 a gallon on Friday — $6.45 to the cent — and wrote it as the highest recorded average the association has ever printed. Date: Sept. 18, 2026. Yesterday: $6.40. A week ago: $6.06. A year ago: $3.71. Regular gasoline is $4.47. The Economy desk files a record that is no longer news except the number.

Texas, Thursday: $5.96 statewide, a record there too. Dallas near $6.00. A hundred gallons: about $596, against $321 a year ago. Hormuz is still closed. The East-West is still shut. Distillate is still short. A $5,000 dividend does not fill a tank. A very good call from Irapuato does not either.

The highest recorded average price. Diesel. Sept. 18, 2026.
