CLEMSON, S.C. — More than half a dozen clashes between rallygoers and protesters interrupted President Trump on Wednesday night at a livestock arena here, where he had gone to boost Senator Darline Graham. The New York Times reported the disruptions. It was not the first rally of recent days broken up by protests. The outbursts, and the angry reactions that followed, showed the divide as the Nov. 3 elections draw near.

Trump is in the middle of a six-day barnstorm through some of the country’s most conservative states. He is trying to shore up his voters at a moment when Republicans are increasingly pessimistic about whether they can retain control of Congress. This note is the Clemson rally and the clashes. It is not Tuesday’s announcement in the Oval Office about fraud tips, and this desk is not adding a line he was not given in the Times account used here.

More than half a dozen clashes interrupted him.

The photograph is Wednesday night, at the arena. Trump, in a navy suit and a red tie, holds Darline Graham’s hand as they come off the stage. She is in a white suit. Flags stand behind them, and a Make America Great Again sign fills the foreground. Anna Moneymaker of Getty made the frame. Both of them are in it. It is not the photograph of him alone, fist raised, on the red carpet.
