U.S. stock exchanges are closed Monday for Labor Day. So is the bond market. Banks and post offices too. USA Today ran the shop-hours list: grocery and the big chains stay open. That is the civic calendar. The Science desk’s file is the other clock: the models that price oil, the 767, and the pump do not take the federal holiday.
A taxi without a steering wheel is still a liability question in New York while the tape is dark. A converted passenger jet is still a 32-year-old airframe in Miami grass. The holiday stops the open outcry. It does not stop the software, and it does not un-crash a runway.
