NASA and IBM on Thursday released an open-source AI model trained on the Moon. Hugging Face has the weights. GitHub has the code. It was built on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter tiles — about two million of them, a meter a pixel — plus GRAIL and Japan’s Kaguya. The Science desk files a map, not a landing.
The model beat a standard vision net by nearly 19 percent on crater work with half the labels, NASA and IBM said. Polar ice estimates ran as much as 22 percent tighter. Ice is water. Water is oxygen and fuel. The agencies want a Moon base. The tool is for the ice in the dark craters no one walks yet.
