NASHVILLE — Christa Pike, 50, was in critical condition at a Nashville hospital after Tennessee failed to execute her on Wednesday. Officials administered two doses of pentobarbital. She was still conscious, her lawyers said, and witnesses heard her snoring after the curtain closed. The Death Penalty Information Center said it was the first time in the modern era of capital punishment that a person received an execution drug and survived.

Pike was to have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, for a murder she committed at 18 in 1995. An appeals court stopped the injection an hour before it was to start. The U.S. Supreme Court later lifted that stay. Her lawyers told the Tennessee Supreme Court she was in unnecessary agony.

Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, ordered a comprehensive third-party review of what happened and said the one remaining execution scheduled this year will not take place. It was the second failed execution in Tennessee this year. The States desk files the pause. The White House appointment is on the front.
