NEW YORK — The Yankees beat the Red Sox 9 to 0 on Tuesday night in the first game of their American League wild-card series. New York collected 12 hits. Boston collected 3, and no runs. The Yankees lead the series, one game to none.
It was one of four openers. The Braves beat the Phillies 5 to 3. The White Sox beat the Astros 6 to 3. The Padres beat the Cubs 8 to 0. ESPN said Ben Rice and Cam Schlittler were the Yankee names of the night. The Sports desk files the shutout. It does not invent the rest of the box score.
Nine runs, twelve hits, and a zero on the Boston side.
