Comic Con 2025: «A Temple to Folk Art»: George Lucas reveals his new museum

San Diego, CA—George Lucas described his museum, which is expected to be ready in 2026, as “a temple to popular art.”

At 81 years old, the creator of “Star Wars” participated for the first time in a panel at Comic-Con, alongside Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, to share details about his museum, designed by Ma Yansong, which will be located in Los Angeles with an opening date set for 2025.

Standing tall, as the great man he is, he was welcomed by 6,500 souls in Hall H of the convention center, many of them with their lightsabers.

“I’ve been collecting art since college, and when I was in college, almost in the Stone Age, I couldn’t afford to buy real art,”

Lucas explained.

Enchanted with art

He said he loves all art, whatever it may be, but he couldn’t always afford comics because at that time, when he was younger, they were underground.

The panel moderated by actress Queen Latifah quickly became one of the most memorable moments of the 2025 edition, marking a milestone for both attendees and the history of Comic-Con itself.

Without touching on any of his films, he opened Pandora’s box for those present and showed a little of what will be inside the structure.

The list includes drawings from the original Iron Man comic, a little bit of Black Panther, old sketches from Peanuts, the first drawing of the character Flash Gordon from 1934, concept art for Indiana Jones, and paintings by Frida Kahlo.

“From my experience making movies and things like that, other people’s opinions don’t matter much. The only thing that really matters is what you do and how you feel about it,” he emphasized gratuitously.

The importance of narrative art

Del Toro said that the museum is a clear statement of the supreme importance of narrative art.

“Furthermore, it is truly the first museum of this scope that exists, which enshrines works that are significant to our culture,” the Mexican filmmaker pointed out.

Without leaving aside the topic of Artificial Intelligence, which he criticizes so much, he stated that he considers art created by an application to be “oppressive.”

“In other words, you can’t get passion from… ‘Damn application,’” he lashed out.

The Mexican filmmaker emphasized that stories shape the world.

«One of the narrative branches that is brutally applied is propaganda. Art celebrates the work of incredible people, but it also celebrates what belongs to us: myth. Propaganda belongs to a very small group. Myth unites us and propaganda divides us,» he concluded.
