A suspect carrying guns and knives was subdued outside the White House correspondents’ dinner, according to law-enforcement officials, while the annual ritual of toasts and television jokes continued inside. The man never reached the ballroom. That is the official comfort. It is also the official fact.
Washington has a talent for staging two events on the same night: the one that is televised, and the one that is handled in a side street. The dinner is a pageant of proximity to power. The sidewalk is where the country’s ordinary violence tries the door.

Rhoam Summer, 5, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25, were killed Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary. Police named the shooter as Griffin J. John II, 16. A parent, Kaylub Giamanco, shot him inside the school.

A 16-year-old killed four at a Bend elementary school.
Police said a boy shot through the locked doors of Silver Rail Elementary on Thursday. A teacher and three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically hurt. The shooter was found dead. He has not been named.
