The man never reached the ballroom. That is the official comfort. It is also the official fact.
Washington has a talent for staging two events on the same night: the one that is televised, and the one that is handled in a side street. The dinner is a pageant of proximity to power. The sidewalk is where the country’s ordinary violence tries the door.
Officials said the suspect was stopped before he could enter. No one inside the hall was injured. The speeches went on. The country will remember the jokes first, if it remembers the night at all. The U.S. desk files the other paragraph.
