WASHINGTON — Senior House Republicans expect to lose the chamber on Nov. 3, Politico reported Wednesday. Five GOP lawmakers, granted anonymity, told the paper the House has all but slipped away. One of them predicted Democrats would pick up about 10 seats. Even members in newly drawn Florida and Texas districts were “hanging on with their fingernails,” that lawmaker said. A third said, “These are not the moves of a party that’s going to keep the House.” Former Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo said no one he has spoken with privately still believes the party can hold the House.

The party has already pulled advertising out of races it once meant to defend, including Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa, Rep. Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey, and the Omaha district of retiring Rep. Don Bacon. The Congressional Leadership Fund canceled time in Nebraska and Iowa. The Senate Leadership Fund took that airtime for Sen. Pete Ricketts and Rep. Ashley Hinson. Bacon told Politico the problem is the president’s polling. Speaker Mike Johnson, campaigning in Texas, said “the polling is wrong.” White House spokesperson Liz Huston said Trump remains committed to Republican majorities in both chambers. Chris Winkelman, who runs the House super PAC, said the money is moving to keep a path to 218 seats.

Trump campaigns for the real Dan Sullivan in Alaska · CNN · Watch on CNN

Trump is on the road. He rallied Tuesday night in Wasilla, Alaska, for Sen. Dan Sullivan, and called Democratic nominee Mary Peltola “no friend to Alaska.” The Associated Press photographed him arriving in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Politico said he is due in Bullhead City, Arizona, today, and then at a rally in Kalispell, Montana. He has not yet given the Arizona speech. Politico reported that he told a crowd, “If you elect a Republican House and a Republican Senate on Nov. 3, you get $5,000.”

The photograph shows Trump speaking into a microphone, one hand at his temple, on this campaign swing. It is the Alaska stop, not the Arizona rally, which had not started when this edition closed. The Politics desk files the House. The price index is on the economy page.
