HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — President Trump told a Saturday rally at Truist Arena that his second term can do what the first could not. “I can do stuff that is unbelievable,” he said. He was riffing on the decision to have the government call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. “I don’t think I could have done this in my first term. This is a much more powerful term,” he said. “Google wouldn’t have taken my call in the first. Now, they kiss my ass.” He added, “Well, I also changed the name of a lake in Canada to the Lake America,” referring to Lake Ontario. Michelle L. Price and Jesse Bedayn reported the rally for the Associated Press.
He has asked voters to “pretend that I’m on the ballot.” Control of both chambers is on the line on Nov. 3, and with it the chance of Democratic investigations if that party wins. Republicans privately worry that disapproval of the administration is a liability. The Associated Press set the boast against voter frustration with tariffs and the war in Iran, which have driven prices up, and against a growing view that the president is looking out for his own interests. On stage he said the war with Iran was going to end soon — an assertion he has made many times in a conflict now nearly eight months old — and that gas prices would drop lower than before. The crowd cheered. He said that if Democrats win, the country will “have a depression,” and that their platform includes abolishing the Senate and the Supreme Court. Those items are not on the Democratic platform. He is trying to lump the party in with the Democratic Socialists of America, a few of whose candidates won primaries this year.

He repeated the promise that if Republicans hold the House and the Senate, every adult American would get $5,000. The Associated Press called the promise dubious. It would most likely cost more than $1 trillion, need congressional approval, and add to an annual budget deficit of nearly $1.8 trillion. He added a new condition for Kentucky: if Republicans win, the Department of Defense would invest in revitalizing a drug manufacturing plant in the state. He did not name a sum. He pulled Ed Gallrein on stage. Gallrein beat Rep. Thomas Massie in the Republican primary for the House seat. Massie had pushed to release the Jeffrey Epstein files and opposed the Iran war. Trump called Massie a “jerk” and a “loser” and presented Gallrein as the loyal replacement. About half the arena clapped. The other half stayed silent.
The photograph shows Trump at the Highland Heights podium on Saturday, speaking, one hand on the lectern, the sign on the stage reading Highland Heights, Kentucky. Gallrein was brought up later. This frame is the president, not the two of them. It is not an advertisement.

Sanctions
Trump put the Graham sanctions on hold.
On Friday night he waived the Russia sanctions he signed last month, two days before the law’s own deadline. He told Congress the pause was in the national interest. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said the waivers were about “sucking up to Vladimir Putin.”

The midterms
Democrats have spent $163 million putting Trump on the air.
Since Sept. 1, Democratic ads have named the president nearly 180,000 times. Republican ads have named him about 16,000 times. He spoke in Dalton that night. This note closed before the rally.
