KYIV — Air-raid sirens and explosions sounded in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday as Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany met President Volodymyr Zelensky. A Russian strike hit the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Two people were injured. The roadway was damaged, and so was a hot-water line nearby.
Reuters reported that Russia has been hitting Kyiv’s bridges since last week, trying to cut the city in two and to break the routes between central and eastern Ukraine. Four alerts sounded across the capital on Sunday morning. German officials said Merz would release 1 billion euros in military aid, about $1.13 billion, and 350 million euros to repair the energy system, and that a deal to build drones together was to be finished.
“Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks,” Merz said. “If Russia is not stopped, sooner or later its war machine will turn against us.” The war stays off the front. The governor polls are the lead.
