Americans are still on the road for Labor Day weekend, and they are still paying a number the holiday has never carried. AAA’s national average for regular gasoline stood at $4.15 a gallon as of Sunday, September 6 — the first Labor Day above $4 on record. The old mark, $3.82, was set on September 3, 2012. A year ago the same weekend was $3.19. Reuters timed the break to Saturday. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan had already said $4.03 on Monday itself would be enough to break the chart.

Diesel is $5.88, a record of its own. Airfare is about 20 percent higher than a year ago, AAA says. California is $5.78. Washington is $5.47. The U.S. desk files the weekend America can feel without a briefing: a fill-up, a ticket, a grocery cart that rides a diesel truck.

The holiday that used to get cheaper just got a war tax.

Gasoline demand usually falls after August. This year the Strait of Hormuz does not. Overnight, U.S. Central Command said it had disabled two Iranian crude carriers and destroyed a third after missiles at two Navy ships. Crude has been in the $90s. The president called the war small potatoes on Friday. The pump, on Sunday morning, is still the size of the holiday.

The Justice Department charged 28 voters in California.

All 28 are green-card holders, not citizens. Eleven were arrested Monday. The Los Angeles Times said 21 are suspected of having cast ballots. Noncitizen voting remains rare.

Hundreds of rallies on Saturday were billed as nonpartisan. At the Lincoln Memorial people danced and held signs that said “Vote early” and “Hands off my vote.” In Atlanta, a councilman asked the crowd if they would use the one power the Constitution gives them.

Oregon

Bend named a 5-year-old and a teacher among the dead.

Rhoam Summer, 5, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25, were killed Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary. Police named the shooter as Griffin J. John II, 16. A parent, Kaylub Giamanco, shot him inside the school.
