DUBUQUE, Iowa — President Trump closed the last weekend of the midterm campaign with rallies in two states he has won before, the Associated Press reported. He was in Dubuque, Iowa, and Salina, Kansas, on Sunday. Republicans in both states are fending off Democratic challenges, and the party is already at risk in the House. In Iowa he said, near the start of a speech that lasted two hours, “We’re going to elect ‘America first’ Republicans up and down the line.”

He arrived late in Kansas. Air Force One made a flyover before an outdoor rally at the airport. Hundreds of people started leaving midway through a speech of nearly 90 minutes that did not end until nearly 10 p.m. local time. “This is our last stop. We’re closing it down tonight,” he said. He is scheduled to give his closing pitch Monday afternoon in Washington, at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. On Sunday, stepping off Air Force One in Iowa, he told reporters that speaking there would “show how beautiful it is,” and added, “We might hold it tomorrow or something.” The White House then announced Monday afternoon. He had not given that speech when this edition closed.

More than 54 million votes have already been cast, AP reported. This desk printed more than 52 million on Sunday and more than 49 million on Saturday. This is Monday’s count from AP. It is not folded into those earlier figures.
