WASHINGTON — President Trump signed an order Friday lifting 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian goods, with Senator Susan Collins of Maine in a tight race. The Associated Press said the exemptions cover plywood sheets, packing crates and some machinery, from tariffs he put on $20 billion of Canadian products over the summer. The changes take effect Oct. 30, four days before the election. Reuters reported the list also includes some paper products, refrigeration equipment, and fresh and dried seaweed. To offset that relief, Trump added other Canadian products to the 50 percent list, Reuters said, including carpets, paints, waste, shampoos, cocoa powder, wooden coffins, ice cream sticks, air-conditioning machines, chest freezers, archery equipment and canoes.
Collins said the relief would aid Maine’s blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed producers. “Many of our farmers and growers rely on specialized equipment, packaging materials and other products from Canada that are either unavailable from American suppliers or cannot be replaced without incurring significant expense,” she said. She told the AP she had spoken with Jamieson Greer, the trade negotiator, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. She is running against the Democrat Troy Jackson. This note is not the Michigan Senate race.
