WASHINGTON — Josh Boak of the Associated Press, updated at 9:35 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, reported the verdict in The AP Voter Poll. About 100,000 people who voted in the midterms were surveyed. About two-thirds said President Trump’s own policies had fueled inflation. In the 2022 midterms, AP VoteCast found only about half of voters said that of President Biden’s policies. Consumer prices are up 3.7 percent over the past 12 months. The inflation rate was 3 percent when Trump began his second term.
About 9 in 10 voters said the cost of living was a crucial or a major factor in their vote for Congress. About 6 in 10 of that group backed the Democrat in their local House race. About 7 in 10 said the economy favors the wealthy. About 3 in 10 said it is fair to everyday Americans. The same survey has the S&P 500 up more than 10 percent so far this year, and unemployment at 4.2 percent. Those are not Thursday’s closes.
If I had to do it again, I’d have to do it again.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the war with Iran “drove the gasoline up a little bit short-term,” and that “If I had to do it again, I’d have to do it again.” At a late rally in Iowa he had said “I’ve done a great job” and “Prices are coming way down.” The photograph is Election Day in Lawrence, Kansas. Michael Carman is at a booth inside a Checkers store. Charlie Riedel made it for the AP. Carman is looking down. No one else is named. It is Tuesday, not Thursday.
