SIOUX CITY, Iowa — President Trump walked into a rally Thursday night at the Sioux Gateway Airport to turn out voters for Representative Ashley Hinson, the Republican nominee for an open Senate seat. The New York Times reported from the city. The Associated Press said he was on stage for nearly 100 minutes. He opened, “Well, thank you very much. I love this state,” and added, “I know you’re not all farmers, but I love farmers.” He closed, “Let’s go out and do what we do best, which is to win.” Reuters quoted him telling the crowd, “Pretend I’m on the ballot, because if you get out, we’re going to win big.”

Hinson is neck-and-neck with Josh Turek, the Democratic nominee, the Times reported. Rob Sand, the Democratic nominee for governor, has led his Republican rival in every major nonpartisan poll this year, and only one of the state’s four Republican-held House seats is seen as safe. Hinson arrived to speak before the president. She told the crowd, “I’m not sure that he’s always happy with me when we’re talking, because I ask him for a lot of things for Iowa.” He said she was always asking him to help Iowa, and to “give a little bit more money to the farmers.” Of her he said, “Ashley Hinson, on the other hand, is a mother, a warrior, a patriot, and she will never let far-left maniacs push the radical left insanity on Iowa’s children.” Reuters reported that she has called for an “immediate end” to the war with Iran, and that the rally came as Republicans defend a Senate seat, three House districts, and the governor’s office in a state he won by double digits. The Times said the rally came hours after the two split on a campaign issue dividing the party. He also said, “Get ready to vote and then take a look at your 401(k) and what we’ve done for you. And then vote,” and claimed the accounts had more than doubled in a year. That claim is his. This desk is not adopting it.

Pretend I'm on the ballot.

The photograph is Thursday night, on the stage at the Sioux Gateway Airport. Trump, in a navy suit and a red tie, greets Zach Lahn, the Republican nominee for governor, who is in a blue suit and a pale tie. Both faces are in the frame. Charlie Neibergall of the Associated Press made it. Ashley Hinson spoke before the president and is not in this photograph. A separate Associated Press frame shows her arriving, alone. Another shows the president walking in, and the top of his head does not clear that crop, so it is not the plate. This is not Wednesday night in Clemson.
