The Agriculture Department’s tightening of food stamps is no longer a line in a budget. It is a line in a cafeteria. As millions of households lose SNAP, school districts that used the program as a backbone for free meals are warning that breakfast and lunch will be the next cut — just as the academic year starts.
Hunger in America is always described as a moral failure and funded as an accounting trick. The U.S. desk’s beat is the trick: eligibility rules, reimbursement rates, and the children who eat what Congress leaves them.

Rhoam Summer, 5, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25, were killed Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary. Police named the shooter as Griffin J. John II, 16. A parent, Kaylub Giamanco, shot him inside the school.

A 16-year-old killed four at a Bend elementary school.
Police said a boy shot through the locked doors of Silver Rail Elementary on Thursday. A teacher and three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically hurt. The shooter was found dead. He has not been named.
