President Trump, on his own course at Doonbeg on Sunday, was asked if the labs should slow down. “We’re leading China in AI. We’re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins.” Guardrails, he said, were fine. A halt was not. “You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen.” The Technology desk files a race, not a pause.

Dario Amodei, who runs Anthropic, had asked Saturday for a slower frontier: recursive self-improvement, swarms of agents, time for alignment before the next jump. Elon Musk: “Dario is right.” Sam Altman wanted independent evaluations and a responsible pace. Two of Anthropic’s own safety researchers had already walked. Trump did not name the men. He did not name the paper. He named China.
