MEXICO CITY — Senate committees on Wednesday approved, 23 to 9, a constitutional change that would bar dual nationals from running for president, for governor, or for mayor of Mexico City. Morena, the Labor Party, and the Greens voted yes. The PAN, the PRI, and Movimiento Ciudadano voted no. The full Senate is due to take it up on Tuesday. The articles in play are 86, 116, and 122.

The bill came from President Sheinbaum and had already passed the Chamber of Deputies after about ten hours of debate. She said it does not take dual nationality away from Mexicans who live abroad, or from their children. It would require a candidate for those three offices to renounce any other nationality before registering.
