The Lucas Fire in Mendocino and Lake counties grew past 3,400 acres Saturday, the Mercury News putting it toward 4,000. It was ten acres Thursday morning. The States desk files California as a hillside and a column of smoke, not a bill waiting on a governor’s desk.
Friday, on the eleventh, Newsom swore in 39 new CAL FIRE company officers — the twelfth academy of the year. Since 2019 the fire budget has nearly doubled, to $3.8 billion. About 70,000 people from the pre-bankruptcy PG&E fires, including Paradise, were paid about 70 percent of what they were owed. A bill to study the rest sits with him. The fire does not wait for the pen.
