Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said two oil tankers “exploded” after striking mines while traveling an “unauthorized route” in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state media reported Sunday, Reuters reported. Iran has restricted ships in the strait and has attacked vessels it says break those rules.
That is a claim, carried by state media. This desk is not confirming the explosions, the mines, or the route. No crew is named. No ship is named. It is not the Louise 1, which maritime sources told Reuters on Friday was hit by two limpet mines. It is not the Guard’s separate claim, also Friday, that four tankers had caught fire. Those counts are not added together.
The photograph is Oct. 23, vessels in the strait seen from Musandam, Oman. Reuters made it. It is not Sunday’s claim. Reuters did not publish a photograph of these two tankers.
