KYIV — Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital with ballistic missiles late on Thursday, killing one person, striking buildings and starting a fire, Reuters reported. The city’s military administration said the attack was launched just before 11 p.m. local time. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a strike on warehouses caused a fire on the east side of the Dnipro River. In a nearby district, falling debris damaged a building and caused another fire, which had been brought under control. Reuters witnesses reported explosions. This desk is printing that one death. It is not adding it to the 14 people killed Thursday on the rail platform in Dnipro. Those are two strikes.
In a separate Reuters dispatch, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday, in his nightly address, “Now we have information from intelligence about preparations by the Russians of new ballistic missile strikes.” He said, “We need the means to take out all this Russian evil.” He praised long-range strikes and singled out two Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers. Ukraine’s naval forces said those aircraft had been taken out at a base in the Volgograd region. That is Ukraine’s account. This note does not treat it as a Russian confirmation, and it does not fold it into the death in Kyiv.
Now we have information from intelligence about preparations by the Russians of new ballistic missile strikes.
The photograph is Ukraine’s emergency service in Kyiv, of a firefighter at a warehouse fire the night of Oct. 29. It is not the Dnipro station. The face is not named. It is not the one person who was killed.
