WASHINGTON — The Associated Press reported Thursday that a redistricting drive urged by President Trump did not hold the House. Republicans in eight states redrew dozens of congressional districts over the past year. AP said the plan fell flat in Alabama, Florida and Texas. Courts scuttled it in Missouri, and Missouri’s voters defeated it on Tuesday. In California, a Democratic map drawn in reply flipped all five of the Republican-held seats it targeted.
John Bisognano, president of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, said Wednesday: “This is a catastrophic rebuke of Donald Trump’s failed effort to gerrymander the country into oblivion to save the U.S. House of Representatives for himself.” AP also reported that Maryland voters approved an amendment making it easier for that state’s Democratic legislature to redraw districts. This desk does not print a new House seat total. Wednesday’s note already refused one.
