DETROIT — Former President Barack Obama told a packed high school gym here on Saturday that attacks on Abdul El-Sayed were a movie he had already starred in. “We have seen this movie before. I starred in it,” he said, the Associated Press reported. “I’ve got a long-form birth certificate to prove it.” He called El-Sayed “as Michigan as it gets.” Against those who call him a radical, Obama said, “Abdul shares my values.” El-Sayed, a former public health official, is the Democratic nominee for an open Senate seat. Former Representative Mike Rogers is the Republican. Obama, 65, in a blue shirt and no tie, also said: “Some of these folks say, well, you know, Abdul didn’t like some of the things you did as president. You know who else doesn’t agree with everything I do? Michelle Obama, about five times a day.”
Earlier Saturday he campaigned in Ohio for Dr. Amy Acton against Vivek Ramaswamy. That stop is not this photograph. Reuters reported that President Trump will rally Republicans on Sunday in Port Huron, a place he carried in 2024 with more than 66 percent. He had not spoken when this edition closed. This note does not cover a rally that has not happened. Early Sunday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Obama was “campaigning for a Muslim Brotherhood Jihadist, who hates Jews and Blacks and AMERICANS and TRUMP, and he is going to lose, also.” Those are the president’s words. Reuters said the Senate race, Rogers against El-Sayed, is one of the country’s most competitive.
We have seen this movie before. I starred in it.
The photograph is Saturday, Oct. 24, at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. Obama, in a light blue shirt, waves as he walks the stage. Paul Sancya of the Associated Press made it. Abdul El-Sayed is not in the frame. Mike Rogers is not in it. It is not Sunday in Port Huron, and it is not the Ohio stop.
