Israel marks three years since the Oct. 7 attack.
Mourners stood at Kfar Aza. The 2023 assault killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Gaza’s toll is past 74,000. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire has not stopped the killing or disarmed Hamas.

KFAR AZA, Israel — Israelis gathered in silence on Wednesday at this kibbutz near the Gaza border, three years after Hamas-led militants overran it. Reuters reported the mourning at the place the assault began. The attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, were the deadliest day in Israel’s history. Militants killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Israel’s bombardment and ground operation in Gaza have killed more than 74,000 people, including at least 1,400 in the year since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
That ceasefire halted the major fighting. It has not stopped Israeli attacks, and it has not disarmed Hamas. The anniversary falls 20 days before an Israeli election. The Washington Post noted that almost a year has passed since President Trump declared the fighting over and said “peace in the Middle East” had been achieved. Gaza’s conditions remain dire.

The photograph is an Associated Press frame filed Wednesday: a mourner at a memorial, not a picture of the 2023 attack. The World desk files the anniversary. The strikes on Ukraine are on the war page.
