Hurricane Polo is a Category 5 off southwestern Mexico. The National Hurricane Center called the overnight jump truly remarkable: about 110 mph in 24 hours. Winds near 160. Two hundred fifteen miles south of Zihuatanejo. The Mexico desk files a storm that barely existed Sunday and is now the season’s third Category 5.
Guerrero and Michoacán: four to eight inches, isolated 12, life-threatening floods and mudslides. Acapulco, Lázaro Cárdenas, Zihuatanejo closed to shipping. Classes out on the coast. Civil protection: do not drive flooded streets. The track is forecast to stay offshore, northwest, parallel to the coast.
The intensification rate over the past 24 hours is truly remarkable.
