PORT HURON, Mich. — President Trump told a Sunday rally here that a trade dispute with Canada would be settled soon, without saying how. “I had to do it,” he said of the tariffs, Reuters reported. “We’ll have that settled pretty soon. They’re willing to give us anything at this moment.” He and other speakers said higher tariffs were needed because Canada “has been ripping off” the United States. The rally was at an entertainment complex, for Mike Rogers, the former representative running for the Senate. The office of Prime Minister Mark Carney did not immediately respond. Trump carried this border region in 2024 with more than 66 percent of the vote. The local economy, including the Detroit auto industry, has felt the standoff.

Rogers is in a tight race with Abdul El-Sayed and has tried to distance himself on the auto tariffs. On Sunday he hailed those tariffs for Chevrolet and Detroit Diesel investments in Michigan, and said “the automobile portion of these Canadian tariffs worries me a little bit.” Those are his words. They are not this microphone. Saturday’s edition closed before Trump spoke. He has spoken now.

We’ll have that settled pretty soon.

The photograph is Sunday, Oct. 25, at the entertainment complex in Port Huron. Jonathan Ernst of Reuters made it. Trump, in a navy suit and a white shirt, speaks into a black microphone. Mike Rogers is not in the frame. Abdul El-Sayed is not in it.
