WASHINGTON — The United States carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, a U.S. official told Reuters. The Wall Street Journal reported the strikes first. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they appeared limited and were not a resumption of major combat operations. Another official said the strikes were defensive measures against Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against U.S. assets. Reuters reported that Fox News, citing officials, said the strikes answered Iran firing at a U.S. aircraft. That is Fox’s account, as Reuters relayed it.

The Pentagon referred questions to Central Command. CENTCOM did not respond, Reuters reported. Earlier Monday, Iranian state media outlet IRNA said there were several explosions on Qeshm. The Journal’s account of the same strikes said he told reporters Monday, “we haven’t been doing any fighting for months.” This desk is not choosing between that sentence and the strikes. No casualty count is in the Reuters dispatch. No crew and no target are named. This is not the Louise 1. It is not the Guard’s claim of two tankers on mines, and it is not the Friday claim of four tankers.

The photograph is a still from social media, via Reuters, released Nov. 3. It shows a bright flash and Persian text on the frame. Reuters did not make the picture. No person is in it. It does not identify a target.
