President Claudia Sheinbaum stood in the Plaza de la Mexicanidad in Ciudad Juárez on Saturday and told a border city to remember the cost. Mexico is free, independent, and sovereign, she said. “And it is up to all of us to defend the homeland.” The Mexico desk files a president on the line, not a landscape without her, and a Saturday that was also the national earthquake drill at noon.

She met Chihuahua Gov. Maru Campos in private at the Juárez airport — a short session she had said would not be a working table. The CIA agents who died in the state in April are still between them. Campos wanted the Sentinel tower and the 1944 water treaty. Sheinbaum: see her on the tarmac; send the rest to Gobernación. Round four of the trade talks is Sept. 28 and 29 in Washington. No paper yet.

Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country. And it is up to all of us to defend the homeland.

The Mexico desk files Sunday as it is: a plaza on the border, a governor on the tarmac, and a treaty that is still a call.
