President Trump posted, on Truth Social, a graphic of North America — Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, the Caribbean — washed in the American flag and labeled United States of America. No caption. Sheinbaum wrote on X, in the month Mexico marks independence: Mexico is not, and will not be, a colony or a protectorate of any foreign country. “Orgullosamente somos un país libre, independiente y soberano.” Proudly a free, independent and sovereign country. El País timed the post to Monday. The mañanera on Tuesday did not walk it back.

At Palacio Nacional this morning she put the line in front of cameras. “Faced with any foreign power that wants to suppose it can govern in Mexico, the Mexican people always come out to defend their sovereignty and their independence.” She added: no foreign meddling of any kind. He has called the Canadian prime minister “Governor.” Sheinbaum said Sunday she wanted a good relationship with his administration. Monday’s graphic tested the sentence.
