Sheinbaum: Mexico is not a colony. Trump posted a flag over the map.

“No es ni será colonia ni protectorado.” The mañanera, in the month of the patria, answered a Truth Social graphic.

Claudia Sheinbaum answered a map. President Trump posted, on Truth Social, a graphic of North America — Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, the Caribbean — washed in the American flag and labeled United States of America. No caption. Sheinbaum wrote on X, in the month Mexico marks independence: Mexico is not, and will not be, a colony or a protectorate of any foreign country. “Orgullosamente somos un país libre, independiente y soberano.” Proudly a free, independent and sovereign country. El País timed the post to Monday. The mañanera on Tuesday did not walk it back.

At Palacio Nacional this morning she put the line in front of cameras. “Faced with any foreign power that wants to suppose it can govern in Mexico, the Mexican people always come out to defend their sovereignty and their independence.” She added: no foreign meddling of any kind. Cooperation, she has said before, is not subordination. The Mexico desk of this newspaper is a foreign desk. We file what she said. We do not write the sister paper’s Spanish.

Mexico is not, and will not be, a colony or a protectorate of any foreign country.

The map sits on a pile. Trump has already ordered American records to say “Gulf of America.” He has floated renaming New Mexico. He has called the Canadian prime minister “Governor.” Sheinbaum said Sunday she wanted a good relationship with his administration. Monday’s graphic tested the sentence. September in Mexico is not a week for swallowing a flag.

The trucks still have to cross. Nearshoring did not pause for a meme. The foreign desk files both: a president who treats the continent as a logo, and a president who will not be drafted as a province. The river does not read Truth Social. It still has a customs booth on each bank.
