MEXICO CITY — A constitutional change requiring presidential candidates to renounce any second citizenship is close to final approval, Reuters reported Friday. President Claudia Sheinbaum said at her Wednesday news conference that presidents of Mexico can have only one flag, one homeland, and one people to defend. A majority of the 32 state legislatures have approved the text. Lawmakers still must issue a declaration of constitutionality before it is published. It would take effect in 2028, leaving the 2027 midterms and sitting governors alone.

Critics told Reuters the measure blocks dual-national politicians and is aimed at a possible presidential run by a member of the Salinas family. Only Cuba and Venezuela, in Latin America, have a comparable rule, the wire said.

On Friday Sheinbaum also said the government expects to send a bill next week requiring social-media platforms to take down content that incites violence. The announcement followed Thursday’s attack at Secondary School No. 13 in Torreón, Coahuila, where a vice principal was killed and others were hurt. Two 18-year-olds, former students, were arrested.
