MANZANILLO, Mexico — Hurricane Simon crept northwest just off the Pacific coast early Monday, Reuters reported, with winds, rain, and flooding that put riverside towns on notice for evacuation. At 5 a.m. local time the National Hurricane Center placed the center about 50 miles west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, in Jalisco. Maximum sustained winds were 115 miles an hour, a Category 3. The storm was moving northwest at 2 miles an hour. On that track it was expected to turn northeast and come inland across west-central Mexico around midweek.
The center warned of a dangerous storm surge near and east of where Simon approaches, and of large, destructive waves. Swells were forecast to make the surf and the rip currents life-threatening along the southwestern and west-central coast for several days. Authorities said flooding and mudslides were possible in the coastal mountains. The Puerto Vallarta airport had already suspended flights while the storm was still offshore.
