President Trump told the Republican midterm convention in Dallas that if his party holds the House and the Senate he will issue a $5,000 “dividend” to every adult citizen. Spend it in the United States, he said. That is the caveat. The Politics desk files a check the Treasury has not printed. Republicans already hold both chambers. The midterm is eight weeks out.

The arithmetic is the story. Census math puts about 240 million adults on the list. Reuters put the sticker near $1.2 trillion, plus interest. Tariff revenue this fiscal year is about $167 billion, the CBO says — not enough. Vice President Vance pointed at the tariff pile on Fox. Several Republican lawmakers flinched on Thursday: $40 trillion in debt, an economy already hot, a pump at $4.30. Some called it a ploy.
