KYIV — Missiles struck the capital in the early hours of Thursday, a Reuters witness said. The attack followed a Russian ballistic strike on Wednesday evening that injured six people and damaged homes, a petrol station, and transport equipment. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said those evening strikes hit two districts east of the Dnipro, and that four of the six injured were in hospital. A Reuters account filed the same morning said Kyiv authorities reported 15 people wounded in the later strikes, and damage to subway infrastructure on the Southern Bridge. This desk is not folding the six and the 15 into one toll, and it is not printing a Thursday death count. The Reuters file used here does not give one.
In Lipetsk, about 250 miles south of Moscow, drones hit apartment buildings and a medical facility and injured one man, Governor Igor Artamonov said. Ukraine sent hundreds of drones toward Moscow overnight, the same wire reported. Steve Witkoff held talks this week with President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin said Putin had agreed to resume U.S.-mediated talks as soon as next month. This note is the missiles. It is not a peace deal.

The photograph is firefighters in Kyiv at night. Two of them, in helmets, pour a hose onto a fire in a collapsed building. A third stands in the smoke. It is the barrage that ran from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. It is not Tuesday’s highway, it is not Wednesday morning’s crushed cars, and it is not a count of the wounded.
