KYIV — Russia attacked Ukraine's energy system overnight with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. The Associated Press reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv again received no early warning from partner countries that had previously shared intelligence. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched the missiles and 269 drones. Air defenses destroyed or suppressed 243 drones and four missiles. Strikes were recorded at 25 places, and debris fell in eight. Zelensky said on social media that the barrage hit 28 substations and other energy sites and cut electricity, heat, and running water for more than half a million people. He said Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the surrounding region. Officials in the capital said a 21-year-old woman was killed. Air force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said on national television that there was no warning before the first wave, and that word of a second wave arrived too late for the sirens.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asked Monday, said he had no information about the night's attack. Russia's Defense Ministry said it had hit a data center, a Fire Point logistics hub, a plant making drone parts, and a locomotive depot, and that it had struck a bulk carrier about 80 miles southwest of Odesa. Kyiv's military administration described a private medical facility and a metro station damaged in the Desnianskyi district, and schools and a sports site in Dniprovskyi. Reuters reported that officials also counted two people killed in Kryvyi Rih. This desk is not adding those two to the Associated Press count from the capital.

Once again, there was no early warning from our partners.
