Russian drones hit a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova in Odesa region on Wednesday, killing two civilians and wounding three at Starokozache, Gov. Oleh Kiper said. Traffic stopped. A Moldovan driver was among the wounded. In Kyiv, a jet-powered drone struck a 24-story apartment house in Darnytskyi around the 11th floor, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said; nine people were injured in the capital. Overnight, local authorities counted at least 12 dead and 66 wounded across the country. The War desk files the end of a pause that existed only for American envoys.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were in Kyiv after Moscow on Labor Day. They brought no breakthrough. Tuesday the bombardment resumed. Wednesday it had a checkpoint and a high-rise. Ukraine is contracting about a thousand Patriot missiles with allied help and an E.U. loan, the defense minister said. Batteries, not tarmac photographs, are the count that matters.
