HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Associated Press reported Friday morning that data-center regulation was not on most midterm ballots, and was not among the top issues for most voters. Hard-line opposition to the warehouses was still in the platforms of many candidates, including Democrats who took governorships Republicans had held in Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Nevada, and Iowa. AP called several of those states data-center hotspots. Those governorships were already called. This note is the servers, not a second call.

Clayton Tucker, the first Democrat elected Texas agriculture commissioner since 1986, told the AP that his pledge to fight data-center development was critical to the win. Everywhere he went, AP reported, he said ranchers worried the centers were an existential threat to water that is already short. AP said skepticism of the warehouses and of electricity prices ran together with the affordability argument. It also said a tougher regulatory climate is expected even if President Trump, whom AP called perhaps the industry’s biggest champion, stalls a federal crackdown. This desk does not print a dollar figure for the ads.

Everywhere he went, he said, ranchers worried that data centers posed an existential threat to their dwindling water supplies.
